I’ve found the key to real growth.
Five years ago when I joined my first company (an early startup), a senior engineer had told me “I don’t think you could ever be a good programmer, Shashwat”.
Your first reaction could be ‘That’s so mean’ or maybe ‘You must have done something wrong’, Both of these statements are true. I had read only half of the problem statement of that task, my programming skills weren’t up to par with my colleagues and I took more time to understand everything, compared to most people (Atleast I think so)
Fast forward to today. Alright, let’s skip today. Let’s just fast-forward to a year from the day I felt hurt.
With one year of experience, a senior told me ‘I was the backbone of this company’.
So, what changed in a year?
In a world where everything feels rushed, consistency is often underestimated. Yet, it’s this simple habit of showing up each day that drives true change. Life can be unpredictable, and while we can’t always control what happens, we can control our willingness to participate.
I worked very hard, slowly understanding the codebases, learning the fundamentals one step at a time, and improving my programming skills by practicing every day.
I asked questions to pretty much everyone. I wanted to learn and I didn’t care how bad I’d look in someone’s eyes because I wasn’t being called ‘good’ anyway.
Today’s world is focused on instant rewards. But true progress doesn’t work that way. Whether it’s creating content, building a career, or mastering a skill, the reality as you all know is that growth is slow. Every successful person knows the value of sticking with something — even when it feels like no one is noticing.
