Last night, my imaginary girlfriend and I were checking my Medium stats, and we were shocked to see how bad short form content had performed.
I mean, who doesn’t want to see how their work is being received?
But there were articles with 50 views and 1 read. Was it only the publisher at @short.sweet.pub who had viewed it?
This was weird.
Until my imaginary girlfriend pointed me out to the ‘i’ next to the read ratio.
The tooltip explained: A ‘read’ is only counted if a person spends 30 seconds or more on your story.
Now, if I write 150–300 words as a short and valuable content, it’s definitely easier for you to grasp and read, but have you ever thought about me?
So, what’s the solution?
Should we just leave short-form writing altogether?
Listen, I don’t have an answer to this, I believe. But my imaginary girlfriend does.

Writing is about connection, not numbers. If even one person reads your work and finds value in it, isn’t that a success in itself?
I’d put my take on that too.
For now, I’ll keep experimenting. Perhaps this very article can generate a lot of money. Who knows? Lightening may strike.
