How small rituals led me to a greater well-being.
“Night routines are like the closing notes of a symphony, bringing harmony and calm to the day, preparing the mind and body for peaceful rest.”
Just like the morning routine sets the tone for the day, a good night routine sets the stage for restful sleep and mental clarity. It’s a time to align with your body’s natural rhythms and prioritize well-being.
While most people care a lot about the morning routine, I hardly see people (mostly men) caring about a night routine. But come on folks, while the world outside may be buzzing with distractions, it’s essential to cultivate a night routine that embraces calmness, mindfulness, and intentional relaxation. After all, our actions at night influence how we feel the next morning.
But here’s the thing: not all night routines are the same. Some people may follow structured plans while others would embrace a more fluid, intuitive approach.
The key lies in experimentation and understanding what works best for you.
After struggling with sleep and weight issues for years (literally) and getting help from doctors, I started reading about this myself.
Take Tim Ferriss, for example. He has a specific routine to wind down, including reading and journaling, but one of his secrets is a deep focus on winding down without the distractions of screens. This helps him prepare mentally for sleep, and it works wonders for him.
Then there’s someone like Arianna Huffington. She is a big advocate of sleep and has created a nightly routine that prioritizes rest, using meditation, no screens, and setting the right environment to ensure sleep quality. Again, this approach might not work for everyone, but it’s effective for her.
What I found common in most night routines was:
- A distraction-free environment post 9 pm
- Winding down with relaxation techniques
And so I built my flexible night routine:
Let me share:
- Settle in and reflect: After my dinner is done around 8-9 PM, I take a few minutes to journal my thoughts and review what went well.
- Wind down with relaxation techniques: I do just 5 minutes of deep breathing to calm my mind and body. I use retinol, and do some oil-pulling (worked well for me)
- No phone screens before bed: I disconnect from my phone around 9:30 PM and allow my mind to unwind naturally, but I do use my laptop sometimes.
- Create a peaceful environment: A dimmed light, soothing sounds, or sometimes even some calming scents help me enter a restful state.
Conclusion:
If you’re ready to improve your nights and start reaping the rewards of a well-rested mind and body, build a night routine. And experiment with your routine. Test what feels right. Adapt as needed, and soon enough, you’ll have your formula for a restful, rejuvenating night.
