I’ve read so many articles here, about the ultimate cheat code!
You need those Partner Program reads, and maybe the inspiration just isn’t there. So, you open a new tab.
You type a quick prompt into Claude.
A few seconds later, you have a perfectly passable, structured, 1,000-word draft.
You tweak a few sentences, hit publish, and wait for the claps to roll in.
Firstly, this isn’t fair.
Secondly, this quiet little open secret among freelance writers, content marketers, coders, and Medium bloggers where they are all playing the game, and Claude is their MVP won’t work anymore.
Claude was smarter than ChatGPT, less robotic, and its prose actually sounded like it was written by a human being who had read a book before.
Well, I hope you enjoyed the ride.
Because the free lunch is officially over.
Anthropic just dropped a nuclear bomb on the AI generation community, and if you aren’t paying attention, you’re about to get caught in the blast radius.
Claude is getting a watermark.
And it’s going to fundamentally change the Medium ecosystem as we know it.
Let’s sit with that for a moment.
The Invisible Snitch: How Steganography Works!
When most people hear the word “watermark,” they picture a giant, translucent Getty Images logo plastered across a stock photo. But in the world of Large Language Models (LLMs), a watermark isn’t something you can see.
It’s not an invisible HTML tag, and it’s not a hidden character you can just backspace away.
Anthropic is implementing something called steganography, which they outline in their official support documentation.
Here is how it works, in plain English:
every time Claude generates a response, it has to choose the next word from a massive list of potential candidates.
The watermark works by subtly biasing Claude’s word choices to create a specific, hidden statistical pattern over the course of a document.
To the naked eye, the text reads perfectly normally.
But if you run that text through Anthropic’s detection tool, the algorithm will pick up on the statistical breadcrumbs left behind and flag the text as AI-generated.
It’s completely invisible.
It’s baked into the very DNA of the sentences you are copy-pasting into the Medium editor.
And it’s going to be applied worldwide.
If you use Claude to write your Medium articles, your client briefs, your code, or your college essays, you are now operating with a tracking device attached to your keyboard.
You are effectively carrying a digital scarlet letter.
If you want to see what panic looks like in real-time, just take a stroll through X and subreddits right now.
The community is in full-blown meltdown mode, and frankly, they have every right to be.
The consensus is resounding:
this is a catastrophic blunder.
For professionals who rely on Claude not to cheat, but to assist, to brainstorm, to outline, or to edit their own original thoughts, this update is a nightmare.
Imagine writing a completely original article, feeding it to Claude just to fix some clunky transitions, and then having the entire piece permanently branded as “AI-generated.”
On Medium, where readers value authenticity and human connection, an AI detection flag is the kiss of death.
If Medium’s internal curation algorithms start using this detection tool to filter out steganography-marked content, only right people will be getting Boosted.
Say goodbye to their distribution.
As someone sarcastically put it, this watermark isn’t a badge of honor, it’s a “scarlet letter.”
It’s the tech equivalent of a permanent record.
But the outrage isn’t just about getting caught.
It’s about what this watermark is going to do to the actual quality of Claude’s output.
The Enshittification of Claude
Anthropic swears up and down that implementing this steganographic watermark will not degrade the quality of Claude’s responses.
The internet is calling BS.
Think about it logically.
If an AI model is forced to choose its words based on a hidden statistical pattern rather than choosing the absolute best, most accurate, most natural-sounding word for the context… how can the quality not suffer?
You cannot optimize for two completely different outcomes at the same time.
You cannot optimize for maximum logical coherence and a hidden cryptographic signature without something giving way.
We are watching the real-time “enshittification” of one of the best AI models on the market, all in the name of transparency and EU compliance.
If you are a creator who has been relying heavily on Claude to pump out three articles a week to keep the algorithm fed, you need to pivot.
Hard and fast.
1. The End of Copy-Paste
The days of highlighting an entire output, hitting Ctrl+C, and dumping it straight into Medium are over.
If you do that now, you are playing Russian Roulette with your account.
Algorithms will detect it.
Medium will inevitably start downranking it to protect the integrity of the platform.
2. You Actually Have to Write Again
I know, it’s a terrifying concept.
But AI can no longer be your ghostwriter, it can only be your research assistant.
You can use it to build outlines.
You can use it to gather data.
But the actual keystrokes? The voice? The unique phrasing?
That has to come from you.
You have to run the AI output through the filter of your own human brain, rewrite the sentences, and strip out the statistical tracking.
3. The Rise of the Anti-AI Premium
As AI-generated slop floods the internet, and as these watermarks make it easier than ever to filter that slop out, truly human-written content is going to skyrocket in value.
We are about to see a massive divide on platforms like Medium.
On one side, there will be the cheap, mass-produced, watermarked AI content screaming into the void.
On the other side, there will be premium, bespoke, human-authored content.
And the people who can prove they belong in the second category are the ones who are going to get Boosted, get read, and get paid.
I kinda like it! :’)
Anthropic’s decision to watermark Claude is a moment for the internet.
It is a necessary evil in a world terrified of deepfakes and misinformation.
I know it is also a devastating blow to the creative workflow of millions of bloggers.
But, the safety nets have been removed.
The training wheels are off.
If you want to survive as a writer on Medium in this new era, you can’t just be a “prompt engineer” anymore.
Now, go open a blank draft, and remember how to do this the hard way.
In case we are meeting for the first time, come over here, it’ll be worth the roller coaster of articles that are gonna come up in the next few weeks.
I run a bunch of apps at AIBucket. I do not use AI in my writings hehe and you shouldn’t either. How I went from 0 to 1000 here :)
