Everywhere I turn, I hear it
“Find your niche”
Writing advice columns, YouTube videos, social media posts — everyone seems to be chanting the same mantra.
It’s almost as if writing without a niche is the ultimate taboo -.-
For a while, I tried to play along, pondering over what my niche could be.
Should I write about:
Tech?
Productivity hacks?
Personal experiences?
Nothing seemed to fit. And then, I decided — I don’t care about a niche.
For me,
The goal has always been simple:
To write.
Why “Niche” Feels Restrictive
When I first started writing, I thought having a niche would make things easier — like putting my creativity into a neat, organized box.
But instead of giving me clarity, it felt like I was being caged in.
My interests are far too varied to stay confined to one label.
One day, I’m buzzing with excitement to share how I solved a tricky technical challenge. The next, I’m lost in thoughts about a serene trip to the mountains and itching to write it all down.
It’s not that niches are bad — they clearly work wonders for some people — but for me, the constant pressure to stay within a narrow theme was more exhausting than liberating.
It’s About Connection, Not Categories
If there’s one thing I’ve learned along the way, it’s that the readers don’t really care about niches. They care about authenticity.
The pieces that resonate most are the ones that I’ve written straight from the heart — whether they’re about work, life, or something completely random. It’s not about fitting a category; it’s about being real.
This realization has been a game-changer for me. It’s allowed me to show up as I am — messy, curious, and constantly changing. I’m not just a “tech writer” a “travel blogger” or a “self-improvement enthusiast.” I’m all of those things and more, depending on the day.
Writing for the Love of It
At the end of the day, I don’t need a niche to validate my writing.
The goal isn’t to fit into a neat little box; the goal is to write. To grow. To connect.
Writing freely has brought back the joy I felt when I first picked up a pen (or, well, opened a Word doc).
