We call these the “ghost” bugs.

And, there is nothing more annoying than the “ghost” bug ;-;

So, let’s talk about this one.

You have five tabs open. You’re reading an article on Tab 3. Maybe, you have YouTube paused on Tab 2.
You aren’t touching the keyboard. You aren’t even touching the mouse.
And, suddenly
Poooooooooof

The tab you were looking at just vanishes.

The browser didn’t crash, the other tabs are still there.

It’s just… gone.

Then ten seconds later, another one goes.

It feels like someone is remote-controlling your Mac, or your hardware is failing.

I ran into this recently on my Mac. It drove me up the wall. After digging through forums and trial-and-error, I realized it’s usually a specific conflict between macOS and Brave’s resource management.

If this is happening to you, don’t panic.

Here is precisely how to fix it, starting with what actually worked for me.

1. The “Force Quit” (Do this first)

This sounds too simple to be the real fix, but it’s often the only one you need.

When you close a browser normally (clicking the red X or Command+Q), sometimes the background “helper” processes (the invisible mini-apps that run your extensions and render pages) do not actually close. They stay stuck in a loop, and if one of them is corrupted, it starts killing tabs.

Don’t just restart Brave. Force Kill it.

  • Open your Activity Monitor (Command + Space, type “Activity Monitor”).
  • Search for “Brave.”
  • Highlight it and hit the X icon at the top to force quit it.

2. Check the “Memory Saver” Setting

Brave is built on Chromium (same as Chrome), which means it has a feature designed to save your RAM by putting inactive tabs to sleep.

The problem? Sometimes it gets too aggressive.

It looks at a tab you are reading, decides “this is using too much memory,” and instead of putting it to sleep, it accidentally crashes the process, causing the tab to close.

Turn it off to see if things stabilize:

  • Go to Settings (Cmd +, ).
  • Click on System (or Performance).
  • Toggle Memory Saver to OFF.

3. The “Private Window” Test

If the Force Quit didn’t work, you might have a rogue Extension. I once had a generic “VPN” extension that started closing tabs whenever it lost connection.

The easiest way to check? Open a Private Window (Shift + Cmd + N) and use the web for 10 minutes.

Private windows disable extensions by default. If your tabs stay open in Private mode, you know the browser is fine — it’s one of your extensions causing the chaos. Go back to normal mode, turn your extensions off, and switch them back on one by one until you find the culprit.

4. The Boring Stuff (Updates and Restarts)

I know, I know. “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” is the most annoying advice in tech. But on a Mac, it actually matters.

  • Update Brave: Go to the three-line menu > Help > About Brave. It’ll auto-download any patches. Old versions of Brave sometimes don’t play nice with newer macOS updates.
  • Restart the Mac: macOS accumulates system-level cache and swap files. If your system thinks it’s running out of memory, it might be telling Brave to terminate processes to save the machine. A full restart clears that out.

The Bottom Line

For me, the Force Quit was the magic bullet. It seems like Brave just needed a hard reset to clear out a stuck background script. Hopefully, one of these does the trick for you so you can get back to browsing without the ghosts.

In case we are meeting for the first time, come over here, it’ll be worth the roller coaster of articles that are gonna come up in the next few weeks.
